Ready for action: faster response times with ambulances in Venice and Barcelona

Medical transports often have to happen at short notice and with exceptional speed. Sometimes that’s because a patient is in a critical condition and needs swift access to lifesaving treatment. Sometimes it’s because an employer or family member has decided to repatriate a colleague or loved one and just wants to get them home without delay. To make the process run as quickly and smoothly as possible, every step in the transport has to be thought through in advance and ready to go. For instance, here at EMS Air Ambulance & Medical Repatriation we aim to get a free price quotation to our customers within an hour of their first call. Once you give us the go-ahead, our team will start working on your tailor-made route plan and schedule within minutes. In the background, they’ll be arranging travel documents, clearances and visas (where necessary) so the journey can run like clockwork once we collect your patient.

Medical repatriation

Another way we’ve been able to minimise potential delays and speed up connections is by stationing our own, mission-ready road ambulances in key locations across Europe. EMS Air Ambulance & Medical Repatriation owns prepositioned, fully ICU-equipped ambulances in two strategic city hubs near the Mediterranean: Venice in northern Italy, and Barcelona in Spain.

Both vehicles are kept on standby at the international airports (Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Barcelona Airport (BCN)) so we can also receive incoming and outbound patients who are travelling by private plane or medical escort when necessary.

These ambulances also give us access to a vast range of destinations across Europe for road ambulance collections and onward transports. By way of example:

  • Barcelona to Palma – 206km (128 miles)
  • Barcelona to Madrid – 505km (314 miles)
  • Barcelona to Malaga – 770km (478 miles)
  • Venice to Rome – 394km (245 miles)
  • Venice to Budapest – 564km (350 miles)
  • Venice to Berlin – 792km (492 miles)

Since a typical journey by road ambulance is between 1,500km (900 miles) and 2,500km (1500 miles), this means we’re able to reach most parts of Europe with our own in-house ambulances from one or the other destination – or, alternatively, from our main European headquarters in the Netherlands. We frequently transfer patients from the Costa Blanca to UK destinations such as Essex and Birmingham, for example. Or sometimes a combination of air and road ambulances is necessary for separate legs of the same journey, such as in this repatriation journey from Malta to London.

Ultimately, being closer to a whole range of hospital and clinic destinations across Europe means we can save precious time in turnarounds and patient collections. To put it simply, we’re able to move faster by being “on the ground” in Venice and Barcelona – ready to transport your patient, wherever they are and whatever their condition.
