Flying with Mobility Equipment to the United States: What You Need to Know
The help available for travellers using mobility equipment has improved in the past decade. Here is our brief guide to flying with mobility equipment.

Before the flight
Traveling with mobility equipment can seem complex, especially when flying internationally. If you’re planning a trip to the United States and require a wheelchair or other mobility aids, understanding the regulations can help ensure a smooth experience. The U.S. has specific rules in place to protect passengers with disabilities, primarily governed by the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). This law applies to all flights to, from, and within the U.S., ensuring equal access for all travelers.
They recommend that before traveling you should
- It is recommended that you inform your airline about your mobility aid and any special assistance you may need at the time of booking or at least 48 hours before departure. This allows them to make necessary arrangements.
- Airlines may require information about your mobility device, including its dimensions, weight, and battery type (if applicable). If you’re traveling with a powered wheelchair, ensure that the battery complies with airline safety regulations.
Storing your wheelchair on the flight
If your wheelchair is collapsible, it may be stored in the cabin. Larger wheelchairs are typically transported in the cargo hold. Airlines are required to handle mobility equipment with care and return it in the same condition.
Crew members can help with moving to and from the aircraft seat but are not required to assist with personal care or feeding during the flight. Some aircraft have accessible restrooms, but this varies by airline and aircraft type.
What if I can’t take my wheelchair on the flight?
Sometimes it’s not possible to take your wheelchair onto a flight, or you may feel that it will simply be too difficult. Don’t worry – at EMS we specialize in international medical transport. We offer a range of services, namely by road using our ICU-equipped long distance ambulances or through the air, on a commercial flight with a Medical Escort, or on a dedicated Air Ambulance, and can safely get you to and from any location in the world.
